Bras and Illusions

Woman dancing in closet

For a simple, instantly slimming effect pull bra straps together at the back and safety pin or tie them together. This simple adjustment will lift your chest and make you look like you’ve dropped about five pounds.

Focus on a bra’s fit not it’s size. The band will stretch about half an inch during wear — so allow room to move. Each breast should fill the cup but not spill out. The bra should lift your breast above your rib cage.

Another thing: Never wear bras with clear plastic straps; they’re not invisible and look silly.

If you’ve got a thick middle, start with undergarments that smooth and hold you in. Add a fitted blazer or wrap dress which are great ways to cinch, creating the illusion of a leaner midsection.

What do you about a pear shape–when you can no longer simulate proportion but dont want your clothes to be just interesting geometries that have nothing to do with shape–and you are tired of wearing tailored black–why are clothes for women over 40 always involving too much fabric and flowing to hide bulges

Many designers are geometrically inspired. Their garments are not specifically designed for women over 40, but they’re just an easy fix for a salesperson when working with someone who believes they are pear-shaped and can no longer simulate proportion. There are no two ways about it.

For day

A sheath is the perfect classic solution for comfort and for disguising whatever fit flaws you may have — real or imagined.

For a casual but finished look, cashmere sweaters — even those in geometric shapes — are great over both skirts and trousers.

You’ll find a few tips for finding the perfect sheath in my “post” on fall trends in my “Dressing” area…

For evening
Wear a knee length dress with a matching bracelet sleeve, knee length coat in a narrow silhouette. You can wear the same coat with evening trousers in both a narrow leg or a silky fuller leg. If opting for the elegant evening trousers wear a top that drapes. Cashmere, chiffon, and silk are the best choices.

One more thing

I’m over 40, and most of my clients are over 40. I have been doing this for many years, so one could say we sort of grew to 40 together. Some fit issues are real, but let’s face it — some are a little less real. So lets give ourselves a break and not walk into a shop expecting not to find anything other than a geometric tent. Its difficult to find a selling professional that will take the time to talk you out of your issues. So keep them your secret and be open to the unexpected. You have to try it on.

How do you pin or tie your bra straps when the bra is on? If you do it before putting it on, how do you get it on?

You are so wise–particularly like the idea of feminine fabric like silk and cashmere compensating for that sheath–by geometric do you mean rectangular like a sheath??

Re: the question about pinning from Marci … According to Domenica you have to pin it before you put it on, and it has to be a large size pin.
