Some words on wearing jeans from our “Dressing” expert Domenica …

The rules for denim have really changed over the past few seasons. The good news is that no matter what your figure, your size, your height, your weight, you can always find a fit.

Dark washes are popular for a fancier look while casual styles range from worn and tattered to classic bootleg. Two of the hottest women’s styles are at opposite ends of the spectrum: wide-leg and skinny-leg.

A boot cut style will help create a balanced figure for those who have a bulging tummy – the jeans must hit across the belly, not above or below it. A trouser type is also recommended because the width of a trouser leg will create a good form.

If you have large hips, you may use mid-rise jeans but make sure they fit around the widest part of your hips, but not too tight – you don’t want love handles. Straight leg and trouser types are recommended. Do not use boot cut — this will accentuate the thickness of the thigh.

Big butts. If you have this asset, stay away from jeans with flap pockets or pockets with heavy embellishments or embroidery. These will only highlight your rear, unless of course you want that, then go ahead. Flaunt it.

For petite women if the hems are too long you can shorten them if the style is straight leg and not boot cut – re-hem with the same gold stitches – tell the tailor “back to original” – they’ll know what you mean. Also, don’t buy cuffed jeans – they’ll make you look shorter.

If you’re fortunate enough to be tall and thin – what can I say – make sure the hem falls at the bottom of your heel.

A special note – I’m of the opinion that no one looks good in skinny jeans over the age of 17 and more than 125 lbs — and even that’s iffy.
