Isn’t it great that the travel industry finally understands that sometimes women just want to travel on their own — solo or with other women friends, mothers & daughters, married or single.  Our travel Advisor Susan does all the research for you (and next week she focuses on traveling “solo but co-ed”) …

GREAT TRIPS FOR WHEN YOU’RE TRAVELING “WOMEN ONLY”

Today there are lots of options for single women including “women only” trips and “singles only” coed travel. “Women Only” trips can also include married women wishing to take separate vacations, mothers & daughters and women friends. Independent travelers might also want to obtain: “Wanderlust and Lipstick: The Essential Guide for Women Traveling Solo” by Beth Whitman and “Solo Traveler: Tales and Tips for Great Trips” by Lea Lane who also has a web-site: www.sololady.com (note that this site includes subjects other than travel).  Other web-sites of interest for the solo traveler are:

Women Only Trips

Abercrombie & Kent is a luxury travel company, noted in previous posts, and their “Journeys for Women” deserves a mention here. Their offerings include trips to Botswana, Sicily, Paris & Normandy and Provence & the Riviera. From their website: “Abercrombie & Kent’s Journeys for Women offer an opportunity to discover the world’s most remarkable destinations in the company of other women, experiencing sightseeing and activities presented from a woman’s perspective.”

Transitions Abroad: This site has been previously mentioned for their many offerings in educational and volunteer travel, and under their category “Best Women Travel Websites” they provide links to an expansive list of “Women Travel Tours and Groups” (trips include the Amazon Rainforest, St. Petersburg, Venice, Croatia, Portugal, Bhutan and much, much more). There also are links to great information in several categories: “Women Travel Advisor,” “Women Travel Reports” and “Women Travel Books.” Tips for independent solo travel are also provided.

Sights and Soul: Women only, small group travel mainly in Europe (some in Canada and Latin America too) focusing on cultural immersion, history, music, art, wine – all with luxury retreats, boutique hotels and fine a la carte dining. A fabulous idea: you usually only change hotels once – moving between a “city” part and a “country” part, using your location as a base from which to explore.

Adventurous Wench: Offers active trips for adventure minded women such as sailing in the British Virgin Islands, Hiking in Ireland, Exploring Costa Rica wildlife. From their web-site” “It’s about friendship, connection & support, not competition.” and “Even if you love him, it’s nice to get away sometimes.” Note that a link to this site is also on www.transitionsabroad.com.

Adventure Women: In business since 1982, this is the oldest adventure travel company for women traveling solo, with friends or mothers and daughters. Downhill ski in Montana, explore the Galapagos, the Great Barrier Reef or Bhutan among many other trips.

Social Jane: This website will help you find women partners for anything from shopping to traveling. Once a member, you can search by location, interest, demographics, etc. Caveat emptor: this is a beta site, so there is not much to report on it, but it looks interesting.

Women on the Road: This site provides good information on women only travel along with “do’s” and “don’ts” for finding a travel companion.

Other websites offering advice, tips, etc for both independent and women-only group travel include: Go Nomad, Women Travel Tips, Journey Women, Women’s Travel Magazine.
