Hay fever — your eyes get red and watery … you feel like you’re coming down with a cold …. your throat gets scratchy … or … Well, now you know definitively that spring is “in the air”. What you’re really feeling are allergies to pollen and, now, according to The New York Times,* there’s even more of a reason for irritation.

The title says it all: “Hay Fever Can Lead to Other Allergies.” Apparently the proteins in some fruits and vegetables can be mistaken for molecules of pollen by the very antibodies trying to help you. Since the proteins have a similar make-up, this can cause mild symptoms such as “swelling and itching in the mouth, ears and lips,” and, “as many as 70 percent of those with hay fever are affected.”.

So, take a peek at the list below and protect yourself this spring by microwaving or peeling any veggies or fruits that match up with your allergy. IMPT: This is because the proteins are commonly found in the skin. Or, read the entire article for yourself here.

If you have these Allergies, stay away from:

1. Ragweed gourds: Squash, zucchini, cucumbers, and any kind of melon

2. Birch Pollen: Apples, apricots, pears, peaches, and cherries

3. Mugwort: Carrots, celery and some spices

4. Grass pollen: Tomatoes, potatoes and oranges
